How do I adopt a pet?
At BARC Uvalde, our goal is to match homeless pets with loving, caring owners. We are committed to facilitating adoptions that result in enriched lives for both the animals and their new owners. With this in mind, we want to make the adoption process simple, quick, and fun! Step One: Do your homework
Take a moment to consider what type of pet will fit best with your family and lifestyle. When you have an idea of what type of pet you can bring into your home, we encourage you to view the animals that are available for adoption. We try to provide as much information as possible about each of our available animals including their size, age, and temperament. Please note that all of our available pets will be spayed/neutered, and current on heartworm preventative and flea/tick control at the time of adoption.
Step Two: Select the perfect companion
Come and meet our animals at our physical location! Even if you’re certain that you’ve found the perfect pet online, it’s important to meet them in person. Our staff will be available to answer any questions and help you find the perfect pet for your family.
If you have a specific animal that you would like to see, please call before you visit. Some of our available pets are being fostered until they find the perfect home, so we will need to coordinate with the foster family to set up a meet and greet. If you haven’t found what you’re looking for online, feel free to stop by our facility. Sometimes we will have more animals available that haven’t made it to the website yet.
Step Three: Complete the paperwork
Once you have selected your pet, you’ll be asked to complete an adoption application which can be found here: Dog Application – Cat Application. It’s important to remember that the person completing the application must be the person who is adopting the animal. Once completed, our adoption committee will review the form. Our goal is to always place each animal in a forever home and we want to make sure you get the best match for your family.
Completing the application does not guarantee an adoption.
You will be asked if you meet the following criteria to adopt a pet:
- You must be at least 18 years of age and have the ability to support a pet.
- Renters must have consent of the landlord before adopting.
- Dogs must go to a home that has a completely fenced yard or appropriate containment for the size of your pet. Chaining your pet is not allowed.
- Current pets must be up to date on vaccines.
A home visit may be scheduled once the application for adoption has been reviewed.
Step Four: Pick up your pet
Once the committee has approved your application, our office staff will notify you. At the time of pick up, your adoption fee will be required.
Adoption Fees
Cats: (Over 6 months of age) $45 Kittens: (6 months & younger) $75
Dogs: (Over 6 months of age) $100-$150 Puppies: (6 months & younger) $125
We recommend that you bring a kennel/carrier to safely transport your new pet.
Step Five: Provide ongoing healthcare
All animals are given monthly heartworm preventative and flea/tick control until adopted. They are also current on vaccinations, and will be spayed/neutered at the time of adoption. It is the new owner’s responsibility to continue regular veterinary care. We highly recommend that you schedule an appointment within a month of adoption so you can continue your pet’s veterinary maintenance.
Step Six: Get to know your new companion
